Staying on top of tax deadlines is essential for sole traders, especially with the introduction of Making Tax Digital (MTD) from April 2026. Missing key dates can lead to penalties, interest charges, and unnecessary stress, so having a clear timeline is more important than ever.
This guide outlines the most important tax dates for sole traders in the 2026/27 tax year, including both traditional Self Assessment deadlines and new MTD reporting requirements.
Tips to Stay on Track
To manage your tax obligations effectively:
Use digital accounting software to track deadlines and submissions
Set reminders for key dates throughout the year
Keep records updated regularly rather than leaving everything until year-end
Work with an accountant to ensure full compliance
